Casa Alba
Ojai, California
$4.25M
A whitewashed hacienda under a hundred-year-old olive.
Casa Alba was built in 1962 by a ceramicist who wanted rooms that behaved like kilns — thick plaster walls that hold the cool of the morning until dusk. Sixty years on, the plaster is still hand-troweled and the terracotta still ticks as it warms.
A 2023 restoration kept every proportion. New steel windows replaced the old timber frames, the roof was re-laid in reclaimed clay, and the kitchen moved to the garden side so breakfast happens in the shade of the grove.
Five bedrooms are arranged around two courtyards, one for the household and one for guests. A separate studio at the end of the olive walk is plumbed and wired for a second life as an office or a pottery.
